The ‘Tiny Tatt’ Craze Sweeping PMU

Cute, dainty, simple, and often elegant, “tiny tattoos” are exploding in popularity across the PMU scene. Despite PMU (permanent makeup) and tattoo work always being somewhat adjacent to one another, the line seems to be blurring on the difference between a PMU and a “traditional” tattoo artist.

Is this a phase, an opportunity, or something that could change the industries forever? Here are our thoughts on the matter (plus how you can potentially be making some extra money as a PMU artist). Let’s get started.

What is a Tiny Tattoo?

In the world of PMU, the rise of the "tiny tattoo" is nothing short of a phenomenon. These adorable, dainty, and often elegantly understated pieces of body art have surged in popularity, leaving us to wonder: What exactly is a tiny tattoo, and why is it making such a big impact? A tiny tattoo, as the name suggests, is a (usually) petite work of art etched inked onto the skin. Unlike their larger counterparts (let’s call them “traditional tattoos”), these little creations are typically characterized by their simplicity and minimalistic designs. Imagine a delicate flower, a discreet initial, or a tiny symbol.

Tiny tattoos are precisely that – compact, straightforward, and unpretentious. They can go pretty much anywhere on the body, with many people putting them on their wrists, ankles, forearms, or even behind the ear.So, why are tiny tattoos suddenly popular? There are several larger trends at play here:

- First, they offer a subtle yet personal way to express oneself, something that people always want.
-  Second, they are more accessible to both artists and clients alike, bridging the gap between PMU artists and traditional tattooists.
- Finally, the trend aligns with the broader cultural shift towards minimalism and mindfulness, where less is often more. Also, they are usually pretty cheap!

PMU Artists And the Tiny Tatt Craze

For PMU artists, embracing the tiny tatt trend is a natural progression. These artists already have a skill set that aligns almost perfectly with the trend. Proficiency in linework, shading, and an intimate knowledge of permanent ink are prerequisites for PMU procedures. When it comes to tiny tattoos, these same skills translate seamlessly. It was bound to happen!

Many PMU artists view tiny tattooing as a way to add to their repertoire rather than a radical shift in their career path. These small, simple designs often complement the primary services they offer, such as microblading or eyeliner tattooing. While permanent makeup primarily focuses on enhancing natural beauty, tiny tattoos provide a canvas for personal expression.

No Need for
Artistic Expertise

One of the key advantages for PMU artists venturing into tiny tattoos is that they don't necessarily need the ability to create complex designs from scratch. Stencils are often used for these smaller tattoos, drastically simplifying the creative process.

This accessibility makes it easier for PMU artists to embrace the trend without the need for advanced drawing skills. Don’t believe us? Here’s Shay Danielle saying just that:

It's also worth noting that PMU artists aren't competing with professional tattoo artists. Rather, they are utilizing their existing skillset and tools to offer clients an additional service.

This collaboration between two distinct fields isn’t a “stepping on toes” situation, as much as it is a way to get some extra income from a tiny tattoo, whereas tiny tattoos can sometimes be more of a hassle than it’s worth for larger tattoo artists.

How To: Adding It As
a Service

The beauty of embracing the tiny tattoo trend as a PMU artist is that you can easily incorporate it into your practice today. With the right tools, a creative mindset, and a clientele willing to experiment a touch, you can get started immediately.

The good news is that you probably already have everything you need to start tiny tattooing. Permanent makeup artists typically use machines, needles, pigments, and other equipment that seamlessly transition into the world of tiny tattoos. There's no need for an extensive overhaul of your toolkit – just a few adjustments and you're ready to go.

To begin your journey into tiny tattooing, you can start with simple linework. These uncomplicated designs are perfect for beginners and allow you to gain a little confidence. As you become more comfortable, you can start to incorporate shading and even color (all techniques you should already be familiar with!).

Once you get comfortable, you can try out some more complicated stencils. Semi-detailed flowers are pretty popular and a great way to showcase a bit of skill, but still keep things minimal.
