Artist in Focus: Carolina Zarate
The Divinity of Algorithms
Sometimes, Instagram ads can be irksome. For Carolina Zarate, the algorithm was divine intervention.
At 17 years old, the engineering student was unfulfilled. Finding a passion for makeup, Carolina still felt there was a missing element. A perusal of social media landed her on an advertisement about permanent makeup (PMU). After tunneling through research, she knew she wanted more.
Today, she is a PMU professional with a thriving educational platform – and she just happens to study medicine at a prestigious medical school in Colombia. Yet Carolina is sharing a wealth of education beyond PMU, whether it is scam prevention or enlightening the public about living with autism.
The Venezuelan is carving her own entrepreneurial experience while facing tribulation and insurmountable loss. From two years ago, when she decided to work for herself and to start her own brand, to now, she boasts one of the biggest male clienteles in the PMU universe because of her dedication to eradicating stigmas and championing fairness. She epitomizes Perma Blend beauty, in and out.

Q. Many people want to be their own boss but don’t know how to make the first move. What was the moment that made you realize you wanted more?
A. I was at my first ever PMU congress, which I was not able to afford myself. I was only there because I won a ticket through an Instagram contest and as I saw so many successful women and men who were able to afford it, I started to realize that I was not being rewarded enough for my talents and my effort. This is not even talking about money -- sometimes we just want a “congratulations, you are improving and giving the best of you,” and [I] realized that the only person who could fulfill that need was myself.Q. Is there a business experience that is most memorable to you?
A: There are two moments:
1. The pandemic. My mom died [in] February, and the pandemic came in March here in Colombia, and my business had been open for only 5-6 months. Before that, I was just an employee in somebody´s else business and had no savings at all. We couldn´t afford to close and my husband and I got into an economic crisis, but then… the miracle came. The people who owned the place where we used to be located condoned one month of rent, gave us a 50% discount, and one client, who is now one of the [people] I love the most, said, “Hey! I know this is a hard time for business now, so I want to pay a couple treatments in advance,” and she basically saved our business.
2. November of 2021, I saw the offer from Perma Blend to become an ambassador. At the time it felt unreal. Now, I feel such a good relationship with the brand in general that I love and defend each pigment as Mama Bear, because I love how ethical they are when promoting the products, hiding no secrets [about] the components.Q. What has been the most difficult part of PMU education?
A: As an educator, to deal with the fact that not all professionals are ethical. The result is people not knowing whether to take another course [and try] to learn this beautiful profession because their first attempt was a disappointment. And I get it, as I have suffered [from] this as well; as a student, being scammed by a professional marketer impersonating a true PMU trainer, which is very common nowadays.Q. What surprised you the most about being a business owner?
A. How hard it is. I love being an entrepreneur and the freedom when it comes to money, but it’s not synonymous to sweet vacations in Bahamas every weekend. Actually… I haven’t got vacations in a while now. The good part? I’m going to be able to retire young and go for those Bahamas vacations at some point without worrying about the work once I come back. (Hopefully)
Q. In your bio, you mentioned that you have “level 1 autism.” How often do you find yourself educating people regarding Asperger Syndrome?
A. ALL THE TIME. [People say] that I fake my autism because I don’t look autistic enough, my goal is to allow people to realize that an autistic person can also look as “neurotypical" as I do because of a defense shield we create called masking.Q. What social stigma does society need to get over?
A. Men CAN get PMU without being a part of the LGBTIQ+ community; 75-80% of our clients are men asking for PMU lips, so I think we´re getting there. And that if your clients are part of the LGBTIQ+ community, especially trans men or women, it is not okay to gossip about them with your team. People can tell when you do that, and they deserve as much (and even more) respect than the rest of your clients. Their lives are hard enough outside in the world. Give them a safe environment to be themselves.Q. PMU is a pretty personal experience. How are you making your online platform digestible for students?
A. Reels! Reels! And… Yes! More Reels! I’m a medical student and have found way too many things in my career that are related somehow to PMU, so we are creating informative reels all the time about health related to PMU. We’re trying to teach very complex subjects [in] a more easily digestive way.
Q. What Perma Blend pigment color describes you?
A. Can I be all of them? Haha. Well, I think I’m bold, strong and definitely different. I adapt to situations when I must. I think I’d probably be Fiery Fuchsia, which is one of my favorite pigments to mix and boost [with] other colors.Q. What are some key differences when mixing pigments for masculine clients?
A. You don’t want a pigment that is [either] too red or too pink with a guy. [They think] it would be kind of “suspicious” and they usually don’t want anyone to tell they got something done. You want something in between and with some opacity so it doesn’t pop too much, and it looks more natural. With women, we are usually looking for that color pop that will stand out and look more sexy.
Q. How did you become confident with mixing pigments?
A. By wanting to have exclusive results. I’m a natural competitor; it runs in my veins. The only way to get that exclusivity was by making my own mixes. So, I did. Of course, I didn’t test them on clients at first. I started mixing in cups and testing what looked good with what -- using it with [different skin substitutes] to have a better idea of how it would look. Then, finally, [I] started using them with clients. It was (and it still is) a full hit. I wasted tons of pigments, but it paid out and I do not regret it at all. -
Bestow Timeless Beauty to an Aging Client
Beauty and age are not mutually exclusive. But, that doesn’t mean all skin can be treated the same. For your mature clients, you need to adjust your technique. As skin matures it responds to procedures differently and every artist should understand how to acclimate to clients of all ages and skin types. These changes can range from differences in needles, prep for your clients before the procedure, and pigment color selection. Now, let's dive into the art of PMU for an aging client.
The Science of Aging
As we age, our skin can become drier. Our bodies slow down and our lipids and cells may not be replaced as quickly as they did when we were younger. Skin can age at different rates depending on the lifestyle of the individual. Some of the reasons we may see our client’s skin age in different degrees are:
- Neglect & external treatment
- Exposure to environmental elements
- Physiological disease
- Poor health
- Weight loss
- Medication
“We can never reverse the aging process, but we can learn to work with mature skin.” - Anne Marie Rubino, Perma Blend Brand Director
Prepping is a Must
As with every client, the consultation is a requisite part of the process to ensure both you and your client are prepared and informed. Understanding the wants, desires, and personality of your prospective client is always a must, but to have a complete and clear understanding of what you need to prepare for, there are more pressing questions to be asked. Learning your client’s lifestyle and medical information can alter how you perform your procedure, the pigments you choose, the prep requested of your client, or in some extreme cases, the refusal of a procedure.

There are actions they can take to keep their body hydrated, increase antioxidants, and reduce bruising. To ensure your clients maintain the healthiest skin possible, at least 24 hours before the procedure they should maintain a clean diet, drink plenty of water and refrain from all consumption of coffee, alcohol, and aspirin. Select Team artist, Carla Ricciardone recommends using Arnica to prevent and diminish bruising.
Take it from Anne Marie. She’s provided some tips and tricks when you tattoo an aging client:
- For liner procedures, the eyelids are already the thinnest part of the body but are even further thinned and fragile as we age. Always be more gentle with the eyelids and do not push the stretch during procedures on these thin-skinned beauties.
- Always keep the needle angled toward the eyelashes.
- Refrain from using straight carbon black pigment in the skin, as the color will heal more intensely than on a younger client.
- Use a larger needle configuration — this will cause less stress and damage.
- Thin skin will usually blur a microblade line. Instead, consider a shaded or combo brow.
“Carla dilutes her pigments on mature skin. She does this because the reduction of collagen will make the color heal more intensely. Less is more when it comes to Perma Blend — we can always do a touch-up!” - Anne Marie Rubino, Perma Blend Brand Director
It’s All in the Colors
Anne Marie curated The Classic Beauty Trio for mature clients — this collection contains a lip, liner, and brow pigment that work beautifully together or apart.
The Brow: Roots is a medium/light brown that looks great on older women with light hair.
The Liner: Sterling is chosen to be an alternative to black. Black can look harsh on more mature skin, so the grey gives a softer look while still giving the desired definition.
The Lips: Hollywood Punch is a versatile color that is the perfect shade for our mature clientele. With a low opacity formulation, create a sheer, glossy lip or layer the pigment for a luscious lipstick look.

Innovating Medical Tattooing for Transgender Clients
For nearly 20 years, pioneering medical tattoo artist Mandy Sauler has offered high-quality, cutting-edge procedures for a broad range of clientele. From cancer survivors seeking scar camouflage to children in need of cleft lip tattooing, Mandy’s desire to help people fuels her incredible talent. A graduate of the Florida College of Natural Health and the Whitney Center for Permanent Cosmetics, Mandy is Board Certified by the American Academy of Micropigmentationand is a member of the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals. A micropigmentation specialist at Penn Medicine, she’s perfected a variety of treatments aimed at reconstruction. In recent years, she’s taken an interest in working with the transgender community to support them during their transition process. We spoke to her about her work with transgender clients, LGBTQ pride, and what she’s learned along the way.
Perma Blend: Can you tell us about your work with the transgender community?
Mandy Sauler: We do several different tattooing procedures for gender reassignment. For Male to Femalereassignment, permanent makeup can help with creating brows, eyeliner, and lip color. We do scar camouflage and areola and nipple reconstruction for top surgery, and for bottom surgery, we do scar camouflage and correct skin pigmentation from Labiaplasty Orchiectomy scars.
For Female to Male reassignment, we do Scalp Micropigmentation to create hairlines or create the appearance of hair fullness. We also do several procedures for top and bottom surgery. We may need to make areolas larger to give a more feminine appearance to breast augmentation. After phalloplasty, we can make skin tones match, give the illusion of veins and even circumcision.
PB: Which of these do you feel most skilled at? Were there any you felt unprepared for?
MS: Areolacreation is the easiest procedure for me to perform for these clients. I had a lot to learn initially when it came to the procedures associated with bottom surgery, but whenever I started something that was new to me, I took it step by step. Communicating with the client helps me to understand what their desired results are. I love new challenges and don’t let anything that I never done before stop me from trying. I would tell clients that it was a new procedure for me but I’m willing to use my knowledge and skills as a trained artist to do my best work. It was up to them to trust me. Of course, you also have to know your limits and seek advice from an experienced artist if it is out of your comfort zone. Only you know your comfort zone.
PB: What have you learned about yourself and your art from working with the transgender community?
MS: I have learned that if I allow my doubts to pave the way, then I would not be able to change all the lives that I have with my art. The procedures [that challenge me the most] have also taken my art to new heights.
PB: What have you learned about the transgender community from providing these services?
MS: There is so much more than just the transition process for anyone embarking on this journey. From the public to their family and friends, they face so many challenges in being understood.
PB: Why do you think it's important to offer PMU and medical tattooing procedures for the LGBTQ community specifically?
MS: Because these procedures can finish off the reconstruction process and make people feel even more complete.
PB: Have you faced any challenges or learned any valuable lessons from your transgender clients?
MS: I learned about pronoun use from one of my clients in a class. They used the pronouns they/them and were offended that I and the other students were referring to them as he. I learned to ask what a client’s preferred pronoun is and if you aren’t sure, call them by their name.
I also learned that a lot of people don't talk to transgender people the way they would other people. Of course, they deserve the same respect as everyone else. My team is accepting of anyone for who they are whatever their gender, race, or sex.
PB: What do you want people to know about working with the transgender community?
MS: I did my first reassignment procedure in 2011. Now that there is so much more available for clients in the transition process, there is also so much work to be provided by medical and permanent makeup artists. I want to be able to teach other artists to support this community and provide these services.
PB: You’ve recently been doing some amazing work with Operation Smiles in Egypt too. Can you tell us about that?
MS: My team and I were able to go to Egypt and start a program to tattoo children to reconstruct their faces after cleft lip surgery. It was the first time this has ever been implemented on this type of mission and it was probably one of the biggest life-changing experiences that I've had throughout my tattooing career. It was also one of the most challenging. These procedures are highly difficult to begin with, not to mention performing them on children and with a language barrier. It’s not just a lip tattoo, you're reconstructing the face, camouflaging scars, and reconstructing the lips with natural lip colors. We tattooed over a dozen children and were able to leave with tears and smiles on our faces and on theirs. It was truly rewarding work.
PB: Where can people go to learn more about your work?
MS: They can find me online at saulerinstituteoftattooing.com on Instagram at @mandy_sauler on Facebook at Mandy Sauler / Sauler Institute of Tattooing.
I'm an open book. Please message me on Instagram if you have any questions or have any case studies that you want to run by me. I'd love to help.
Check out Mandy’s sets created with Perma Blend for scars and areolas. They offer shades for a broad range of ethnicities, skin tones, ages, and skin types.
