Treating COVID and Stress-Related Hair Loss with Scalp Micropigmentation
Dozens of people have taken to social media and the news to report on an unexpected side-effect of catching COVID-19: hair loss. Many recovered patients of the coronavirus are upset to realize that their hair is thinning noticeably. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) doesn’t include hair loss among its list of symptoms, many doctors say there is evidence that it can be a long-term aftereffect of catching the virus. Whether from stress, COVID, alopecia, or other causes, thinning hair can be incredibly upsetting and disruptive to men and women alike.
Fortunately, permanent makeup procedures like microblading and scalp micropigmentation provide fast, natural, and long-lasting shaping and filling for recessed hairlines, complete hair loss, or thinning brows, lashes, or even beards. Also known as paramedical tattooing, these procedures simulate the appearance of hair growth by creating dots or strokes that mimic the appearance of hair growth using pigments that match a client’s natural (or desired) hair color.
"Now because the body is constantly regenerating its skin, almost one full cycle every month, we are able to work with the body‘s natural processes to layer the pigment perfectly... There is a lot more to this than just making dots."
“SMP at its core is hair follicle replication,” says world-leading SMP practitioner Steven Greitzer (aka Stevey G). “We are targeting a very specific part of the skin (the papillary layer of the dermis and more specifically the dermal papilla). We need to replicate the follicle flawlessly. Think about how a hair follicle sits in the skin. Have you ever plucked a hair? See that black thing? That’s the follicle. In order to replicate that properly we must stack the pigment in the skin in the same way the hair follicle sits, like a column of ink in the skin. This way the micro pigmentation that we have added has the same relationship with light that the hair follicle does. Now because the body is constantly regenerating its skin, almost one full cycle every month, we are able to work with the body‘s natural processes to layer the pigment perfectly over three or more sessions that are spaced strategically a week to two weeks apart. There is a lot more to this than just making dots."

The number of sessions each person needs will depend on the appearance of density they’re going for, but two to four sessions are, on average, successful. Color is built and increased over a series of visits with the most intense results developing the longer you wait between sessions. By layering colors, a natural look is achieved.
With minimal downtime and easy aftercare—approximately three days with no exposure to water or sun and applying a light treatment after several days— these procedures are a great alternative for people suffering from temporary hair loss due to stress or illness like COVID. And the results can last up to five years. Patients report rejuvenated mental health along with an improved appearance.
Perma Blend Pro Team Ambassador Shauna Magrath recently worked with a man who experienced COVID-related hair loss. “Our client developed Alopecia through the stress of Covid,” Shauna’s studio BEAUTYINK Permanent Cosmetics recently said on social media, “he lost all his brows and hair in just a month. Shauna created strokes to fill the area and give him some super natural-looking man brows. Micro blading isn’t just for women, men see the benefits of cosmetic tattooing too.”
“The transformations I get to watch people go through is absolutely incredible,” adds Stevey G. “Everything changes. The energy, the confidence, even the way they walk changes when they leave my studio.”
