How to Conquer Your First PMU Conference
Conferences for permanent makeup artists are a great place to learn from the world’s best artists. You can get a taste of what they teach and decide whether to invest in specific training. You can also make new connections with brands and colleagues, and introduce yourself and your artistry to important people in the industry. This is probably one of the most important aspects. Combining workshops with opportunities to hear various speakers and engage with products and tools you’ve been curious about, conferences can be powerful assets in your journey to grow your business and your artistry.
No matter which conference you’re planning to attend, a few things can help you make the most of your trip. We connected with Perma Blend’s Brand Director and Master Educator, Anne Marie Rubino, for some tips on crushing your first PMU industry event.
Q: What happens at a PMU conference?
A: A PMU conference is a large-scale event with the overall mission of advancing the PMU industry and building community. PMU conferences take place worldwide, and can be focused on specialized techniques, innovative products and launches, and artist networking. It is important to understand that what you learn at a conference are tidbits of information that you can then use in your career, but you’re not going to attend an hour session where an artist is talking about Nano Brows and expect to walk away knowing all you need to know about Nano Brows.
Artists can expect to experience live demonstrations, vendor experiences, training sessions and workshops at PMU conferences. These events typically provide an itinerary of events that will take place during the conference, and often host social gatherings in the evenings like dinners, mixers and after parties. I remember my first SPCP event and how scared I was because I knew nobody in the industry. They made me feel so welcomed and I was able to then see who I wanted more training from and pursue that training.
Q: Why is it important for artists to attend industry conferences?
A: It's important for artists to attend industry conferences because they are a great opportunity to:
- Stay updated on PMU trends and entrepreneurship
- Meet new and established artists
- Take advantage of exclusive event pricing on products from PMU brands in attendance
- Introduce yourself to those brands you love
There is usually an opportunity for you to get more involved in the brands you love just by asking what is new. There are usually freebies too via gift bags, giveaways, and samples.
Q: How should first-time attendees prepare in advance for the most productive and effective trip?
A: First time attendees should do as much research on the conference as possible before purchasing tickets and making accommodations, as cost varies. Best practices include reviewing the conference itinerary, packing and wearing the appropriate attire (as active, casual, or evening wear may be suggested), and researching the brands and speakers to be involved. Also, have your portfolio in order. put together your best procedures in one space so you are not scrolling through hundreds of pictures to show off your work.
"It's important for first timers to attend at least one PMU conference a year, whether in-person or digitally, with an open mind."

Make sure to take notes during the speaker's sessions, and decide on where your next in person class or one on one training will be and who it will be with. enter all the giveaways, take free samples (within moderation), and enjoy yourself!
